One of the custom features of the new Moto X (and the new Motorola DROIDs) is Active Notifications. This is a new kind of Android notification. When a message of some sort comes in, the phone wakes up the screen for a short time to display contextual information about the notification. The user can take action or dismiss without waking the phone up. An Android app called (predictably) ActiveNotifications aims to bring that same functionality to other devices.

When you install ActiveNotifications, the app will add itself to your list of notification handlers, or device administrators, depending on the version of Android. By default it shows every notification on your device, but you probably don't want that. The settings has a page where you can stipulate which apps ActiveNotification will wake up for.

So the phone is asleep, and a text message comes in. What happens? Your display comes on with a minimalist clock at the top and a white notification icon in the center. There is the touch interaction animation around the icon, letting you know it's seeking your attention.

When you press, ActiveNotifications displays a little more information next to the icon. For example, the first few lines of a text message or the subject line and sender of an email. The notification can be ignored, or opened right from that screen. You can also simply unlock the device without seeing that notification immediately.

This is a beta app, but the developer has been iterating quickly since its release. It will work on any Android device, but some might be better than others. There is the obvious possibility of battery drain. A device with an AMOLED screen only has to power the active pixels. but LCD devices have to turn on the entire backlight. For these phones and tablets, it's probably a good idea to keep the ActiveNotifications timeout set low.
