10 Upcoming PlayStation 4 games to watch out for

One does not simply purchase a new video game console. One must also purchase games. PlayStation 4, Sony's next-generation home video game console, is set to hit retail outlets this fall, thus kicking off yet another console war between Sony and Microsoft (which has its new system,Xbox One, slated to appear in the same time frame). There's been an eye-rolling amount of fanboy bickering in the dark corners of the Internet regarding the systems' horsepower, but, really, the conversation should be about the games.
Sony and its partners will release several buzz-worthy titles (a mix of AAA, indie, and free-to-play games) between PS4's yet-to-be-announced holiday season launch day and the end of March. This months-long "launch window" will include PS4 exclusives as well as numerous third-party titles. The games will run the gamut from cartoon-like indie action-platformers to big-budget AAA titles produced by industry giants. PS4's launch window gamers will likely have something for gamers of all types.
If you're looking to pick up a PS4 console this later this year—or very early next year—take a gander at our slideshow that highlights some of the games that you should keep an eye on this holiday season—and beyond. Many PS4 launch windows games are multiplatform titles that will appear on PC, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii U, so don't expect a large graphical leap between the current gen and next gen.

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag

Ubisoft's upcoming historical action game takes place in the 18th century Caribbean when pirates ruled the high seas. Like Assassin's Creed III, Black Flag features hunting and open-world gameplay, but also includes an upgradeable ship and new in-depth naval warfare. The pirate action will also appear on PC, PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U, but the PS4 version will contain enhanced graphics that should one-up the visuals seen on current-gen machines. You can pick Black Flag up on launch day.

Battlefield 4

The Frostbite 3-powered Battlefield 4 is easily one of the most visually impressive titles coming down the pipe for current-generation home video game consoles, Xbox One, and, of course, the PlayStation 4. The DICE-developed FPS's detailed destructible environments are the talk of the town, but it's the game's scale that truly impresses. Battlefield 4's PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One versions have an incredible 66-person multiplayer mode (64 traditional players plus the two returning field commanders) that ensures lots of chaotic military-themed fun when the game's released on PS4's launch day.

Call of Duty: Ghosts

Yup, Battlefield's monster rival is also a PS4 launch game. Call of Duty: Ghosts, Infinity Ward's latest military-themed first-person shooter, is touted as being unlike any previous releases. Ghosts will let players customize their characters, slide, lean around corners, and more. The game also contains an intriguing tale of Special Forces soldiers who unite to free a fallen America from an external threat. Call of Duty: Ghosts will also find a home on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.

Destiny

Bungie may have left its mega-popular HALO series in the hands of 343 Industries, but that doesn't mean that the company is done with the sci-fi shooter genre. Destiny, available on PS4 (as well as PS3, Xbox 360, and Xbox One), is a first-person shooter that will incorporate MMO elements to create a living, dynamic world. Like any good MMO, you can select a race (Human, Exo, Awoken) and classes (Hunters, Warlocks, Titans) before heading into the fray.

Driveclub

Evolution Studios, the development house behind MotorStorm, created this PS4 exclusive title with a focus on team-based racing. Unlike Sony's other high-profile racing series, Gran Turismo, Driveclub aims for a higher-octane competitive racing experience. Evolution Studios collaborated with leading car companies to achieve true-to-life vehicle interiors and exteriors. Driveclub will be available at launch.

Knack

When goblin hordes rise up against mankind, a doctor that specializes in ancient relics creates a life form from those very objects. The being, Knack (a kinda-sorta Crash Bandicoot look-alike), has the ability to incorporate even more relics into its body, thus increasing its size and powers. This PS4 exclusive game resembles a mash up of Katamari Damacy and a throwback mascot character, which makes it one of the more interesting PS4 launch games.

Madden NFL 25

EA Sports celebrates its long-running pigskin franchise with a special 25th anniversary edition. This PS4 launch title (also available on Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PS3) runs on the enhanced Infinity Engine 2, which delivers advanced collision physics when you tackle (and collide with) other players. New is the Madden NFL 25's "All-25 Team" that features the greatest video game athletes in Madden's history. And yes, the infamous Michael Vick from Madden NFL '04 will start as QB, so get ready to hurl those controllers.

Mercenary Kings

Mercenary Kings is Tribute Games' ode to run-and-gun action titles of yesterday. It's rich, detailed 2D graphics recall SNK Playmore's Metal Slug, but the platforming, secret areas, and multiple sprinkle in bits of Mega Man and Metrodvania-like gameplay. That's not to say that Mercenary Kings is a simple mish-mash of concepts; the action is supplemented with a killer gun-crafting feature that lets you create and customize weaponry based on the enemy drops. You can play the unfinished (but thoroughly enjoyable) PC version right now courtesy of Steam Early Access, but if you want to wait until it's complete, you can play it on PS4 this fall with three other PSN buds.

Warframe

Warframe is Digital Extreme's free-to-play third-person shooter that's thrilled PC gamers since March 2013—it now heads to the PS4 has a launch title. In it, gamers play as ninja warriors decked out in power armor who tote swords, guns, and other weaponry. Affinity Points, acquired by completing missions and wasting enemies, let you level up the fighters' armors and weapons.

Watch Dogs

Watch Dogs a game that hits a little close to real world events. Gamers assume the role of Aiden Pierce, a vigilante who uses his l33t haxor skillz to access cell phones, computers, and other electronics in a world suffering an information war. But Watch Dogs isn't just about hacking; combat utilizes stealth attacks, gunplay, and parkour. Watch Dogs will also infiltrate PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC, and Wii U.
