New features of Android Device Manager are out!!

Google finally got their own version of ‘Find my iPhone’ which is a feature that many people claimed that Android lacked. It’s called the Android Device Manager. And it’s actually not an installable app, it’s actually part of the OS. Well technically Google Play Services. With the Android Device Manager you can ring your device, lock it or erase it all from your computer or a web browser. Just go to android.com/devicemanager. Today, we’re hearing (via Android Police) that even more features are rolling out for Android Device Manager. Now the Device Manager will override your security passcode, PIN, or pattern. Which you’ll then be asked to choose a new password when submitting a lock request. That is also the unlock code that you’ll use to unlock the device when and if you get the device back. This will even turn off the display it its on to get it locked down tight. Additionally, if your device is in Airplane Mode, the lock request won’t be completed until the device is reconnected. But there’s not much that can be done about that. This new feature should be available to everyone now, as it’s part of the OS and Google Play Services now. Which is a mandatory update (it will auto-update if you don’t do it yourself). All you’ll have to do is go back into the Security settings and revert the password to whatever lock method you’re looking for. You’ll also want to make sure the Android Device Manager is enabled in your Google Settings app, and it should be good to go. It’s going to be interesting to see what other kind of updates Google pushes out to the Android Device Manager. As Law Enforcement has been on top of Google, Apple, Samsung and other companies to have better security on their devices and keep thieves from stealing phones and tablets. We’ll be sure to watch what happens with Android Device Manager, but it’s nice to know it’s here when we need it.
